Some Problems in Reviewing Historical Documents on the Concept of Mental illness with Special Reference to Aretaeus¢¥ and Soranus¢¥ Views

Abstract
The historical review on the schizophreniform illness mentioned in the Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry 0, the Synopsis, and in the Harvard Guide to Modern Psychiatry especially the reviews on Aretaeus¢¥ and Soranus¢¥ views or mental illness were under critical investigation.
The conclusion was that Lehmann in the Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry had slightly oversimplified the views of Aretaeus and Soranus and he hastingly related the modern schizophrenic concepts to the symptoms presented by both Aretaeus and Soranus which apparently attributable to the different psychiatric illness of the different origins. The interesting symptoms described by Soranus are snnq-esting rather culture bound possession syndromes of various psychotic or dissociative nature than symptoms of any specific illness. By introducing the classifications of mental illness from the Hippocratic school the Harvard Guide erroneously identified the ancient term of dementia with the modern concept of schizophrenia.
It was emphasized that in the investigation of historical facts the cultural factors of the time should be taken into consideration. Also, one should pay attention to what one is doing in comparing the historical concepts of mental illness with the current concept of schizophrenia, for there is still no unified concept of schizophrenia at present time.
